Rare 1952 Sixpence Coin Worth £65 Found in UK

Britons have been urged to keep an eye out for a rare 1952 sixpence coin that could be worth far more than its face value. The coin, described by experts as a 'Holy Grail' for collectors, can fetch up to £65 or more depending on its condition.

The sixpence, which is no longer in circulation, was worth six old pence, or one fortieth of a pound. After decimalisation in 1971, it was equivalent to two and a half new pence until it was scrapped in 1980. While many sixpences are common, the 1952 edition is exceptionally rare due to its low mintage.

According to the Coin Collecting Wizard on TikTok, only around one million 1952 sixpences were ever minted. He stated: 'Find this old sixpence to make money. Keep watching so you know what to look for. The pre-decimal sixpence was equal to one-fortieth of a pound sterling, or six pence sterling.'

The coin holds historical significance as it was the last struck during the reign of King George VI, who died in February 1952. The Westminster Collection, which currently lists an example for £65, noted: 'This 1952 sixpence is a true numismatic rarity. Struck in the final year of King George VI’s reign, it carries his last official portrait.'

A poor-grade 1952 sixpence is worth about £36, with value increasing depending on its condition. Collectors are advised to check their change or old coin collections for this rare piece.
