Halloween event firm calls in liquidators amid £5,000 debt claim

Climax Promotions and Events Limited, a Newport-based company that has staged Halloween events at iconic North Wales venues, has called in liquidators. One firm claims it is owed £5,000.

Liquidation and creditor claims

The company has appointed Libertas Associates Limited as liquidator. A shareholders' meeting is scheduled for November 4, to be held before a virtual creditors' meeting to consider a resolution for voluntary winding up.

This follows a winding-up petition sent to the High Court of Justice on September 7 by Premium Credit Limited, which claims to be a creditor. Premium Credit Limited declined to comment on specific cases.

Previous events and disputes

Climax Promotions has staged events across the country, including Halloween events at Abergele's Gwrych Castle and the Duke of Lancaster ship beached near Mostyn Docks, Flintshire. Both events ended in legal disputes over claims of unpaid fees.

Antony Rowley, who owns the Duke of Lancaster ship, said he had not received a final payment after the ship was used for a Halloween 'Scarefest' last year. John Rowley, from the Duke of Lancaster, said they and other businesses had been left out of pocket, with around £5,000 owed in hire fees. He added that other local businesses who helped prepare the site had also not been paid, and that he had paid local workers so they were not left out of pocket, meaning the event actually cost them money.

Company statement and impact

Climax Promotions told ITV Wales in February that they were in a legal dispute over this, claiming additional expenses due to the condition of the ship. ITV News Wales also reported in February that some unpaid amounts were settled out of court after Gwrych Castle battled the company for an unpaid bill of £2,500.

In a statement, Climax Promotions and Events Limited said: "Climax Promotions and Events Ltd, is entering liquidation following a period of significant financial pressure. There are a number of contributing factors behind this decision, including certain events not performing as strongly as anticipated, wider cashflow pressures and committed investment not materialising. As a result, the company is no longer in a position to continue trading or meet all of its outstanding liabilities. The company recognises the decision to enter liquidation is extremely difficult for suppliers and creditors. Anyone with queries regarding the liquidation should contact Libertas Associates – mail@libertasassociates.co.uk or 020 8634 5599."

Gwrych Castle was approached for comment. The company has been operating since 2020, according to Companies House.
