Gardeners urged to apply granular feed to lawns for stronger roots
Gardeners urged to apply granular feed to lawns now

Gardeners are being urged to apply a granular feed to their lawns before autumn ends, a step that strengthens roots and promotes greener grass through the colder months.

The advice comes from a British gardener, Tom Strowlger, who explains that October is the ideal time for lawn repairs and feeding. Thin and bare patches should be closed up with grass seed, covered with lawn dressing or finely graded topsoil to help germination.

Why Autumn Is the Right Time

The soil beneath is still warm from mild temperatures, and with warm sunshine and seasonal rains, conditions are good for lawn repair. Feeding should happen before autumn ends using a granular feed containing nitrogen, phosphorus, potassium, iron, and magnesium, properly balanced for autumn application. These nutrients keep lawn grass healthy during the short, damp, and cold days of autumn and winter.

Once the granules are spread, they settle and dissolve into the soil, releasing nutrients that are absorbed by the grass roots.

How to Apply the Feed

For larger lawns, a two-wheeled drop spreader is ideal for applying equal amounts of granular feed. It has a range of settings; Strowlger typically uses setting four or five while walking gently up and down the lawn. A mini handheld spreader can be used for smaller lawns.

The grass benefits from the nutrients within days, becoming stronger, healthier, and greener. A healthier lawn is less prone to disease, so spreading the granular feed is recommended now.
