More than three decades after the Chernobyl disaster, the true human cost of the nuclear accident is only now coming to light, with new research revealing that hundreds of workers far from the exclusion zone were exposed to dangerous levels of radiation.
Kate Brown, a science historian at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), has uncovered the story of 298 women working at a wool processing plant in Chernihiv, northern Ukraine, who were exposed to extreme radiation in May 1986. The factory, located 50 miles from the destroyed reactor, received contaminated wool from farms across the region, with bales registering radiation readings of up to 30 Sv/hr.
“The bales of wool the women were carrying were like hugging an X-ray machine while it was turned on over and over again,” Brown said. The women suffered nosebleeds, dizziness, and nausea, and were later granted “liquidator” status—normally reserved for those involved directly in the clean-up. Of the 298, only 10 were still alive when Brown visited, the others having died or taken ill-health pensions.
Official figures from the UN and international bodies have long downplayed the disaster’s impact, citing just 31 immediate deaths and a predicted 4,000 eventual fatalities. But Brown’s research suggests a far greater toll, with thousands of ordinary citizens—like the wool workers—exposed to radioactive materials without their knowledge or consent.
The findings raise urgent questions about the long-term health effects of nuclear accidents and the adequacy of official accounting methods. As Brown noted, the women “knew all about which radioactive isotopes had lodged in their organs”, a stark reminder of the invisible legacy of Chernobyl.
