US Gas Prices Surge Past $4 Per Gallon Amid Iran War Disruption
American drivers are confronting a significant milestone at the fuel pumps, with the national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline now exceeding $4 for the first time since August 2022. According to motor club AAA, this sharp increase marks a dramatic shift from just over a month ago, when prices stood at $2.98, highlighting the rapid escalation in fuel costs across the United States.
Iran Conflict Triggers Global Oil Supply Pinch
The primary driver behind this surge is the ongoing war in Iran, which has severely disrupted shipping traffic through the critical Strait of Hormuz. This strategic waterway typically facilitates the passage of approximately 20 percent of the world's annual oil supply. The conflict escalated following a United States attack on Iran on February 28, leading to a slowdown in oil shipments and a consequent spike in global oil prices.
In response to the soaring costs, the Trump administration announced in late March a temporary measure to alleviate pressure on consumers. From May 1 to May 20, air-pollution regulations for higher-ethanol E10 and E15 gasoline will be suspended, aiming to increase fuel availability in the U.S. market during this period of constrained supply.
Regional Price Variations and Consumer Impact
The price increases have not been uniform across the country, with significant disparities between states. California remains the most expensive state for gasoline, with prices rising by $1.19 since late February to reach $5.83 by late March. In at least two California cities, San Rafael and Santa Rosa, prices have already eclipsed $6 per gallon, while drivers in El Centro, located two hours east of San Diego, are paying $1.32 more than they did a month ago.
Following California, the next four most expensive states are Hawaii, Washington, Nevada, and Oregon. Conversely, Oklahoma continues to offer the nation's lowest gas prices, though it has still experienced an 82-cent increase per gallon compared to a month ago. Kansas, Iowa, Nebraska, and Arkansas round out the list of states with the most affordable fuel, according to AAA's latest statement.
Industry Insights and Consumer Strategies
Jim Stanley, director of media relations at the Western States Petroleum Association, explained that increasing ethanol content in fuel can help expand supply, as the same amount of petroleum blendstock can produce a greater volume of fuel. This approach is part of the broader effort to mitigate the impact of the supply pinch.
For consumers looking to manage their fuel expenses, timing can make a difference. An analysis by fuel savings platform GasBuddy indicates that filling up on Sundays typically offers the best savings, while Wednesday through Friday are the most expensive days on average. GasBuddy noted that while price trends fluctuate with oil markets and seasonal demand, weekly patterns remain surprisingly consistent, providing a reliable window for motorists to save by adjusting their refueling schedule.
