Pest control experts are warning Britons to check unusual places for wasp nests after a 61% year-on-year increase in residential nest activity. Rentokil Pest Control reported finding nests hidden inside Wellington boots, handbags, sofas, car bonnets, chimney stacks, and even a child's cuddly toy.
Paul Blackhurst, Head of Technical Academy at Rentokil Pest Control, explained: “As daylight hours increase and temperatures begin to climb, queen wasps emerge from their winter hibernation in search of somewhere to build nests. They’re not fussy about where they set up home, and anywhere warm, sheltered and undisturbed will do.” He added that nests found in spring can quickly develop into large, highly active colonies by summer, making early identification and treatment crucial.
Blackhurst also warned against dangerous DIY “hacks” from social media, noting that nearly half of Brits turn to social platforms for pest advice. “Tackling a wasp nest yourself can be extremely dangerous. Disturbing a nest may trigger aggressive behaviour and increase the risk of multiple stings,” he said.
Rentokil advises homeowners to arrange professional treatment if they suspect a nest, especially as colonies grow larger and more defensive during the summer months.
