UK Drivers Confront Record Fuel Price Surge Amid Iran Conflict
British motorists have been struck by unprecedented monthly increases in fuel costs, with new analysis revealing that the escalating conflict in Iran has triggered the most significant price hikes ever recorded in a single month. The RAC reported that the average price of a litre of petrol at UK forecourts surged by 20p, climbing from 132.8p on 1 March to 152.8p by the end of the month. Diesel drivers faced an even more severe impact, with the average cost per litre skyrocketing by 40p, from 142.4p to 182.8p, over the same period.
Unprecedented Monthly Rises Outstrip Previous Records
These dramatic increases have far surpassed previous monthly records, which were set during the aftermath of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. In June 2022, petrol prices rose by 17p, while diesel increased by 22p in March 2022. The current surges highlight the severe economic repercussions of the Iran oil crisis on everyday consumers. Despite these record-breaking rises, average fuel prices remain below the all-time highs experienced in the summer of 2022, when petrol peaked at 191.5p per litre and diesel reached 199.0p per litre.

RAC head of policy Simon Williams emphasised the severity of the situation, stating, "March has been truly unprecedented – fuel prices have never risen this fast in a single month. The increases drivers have had to endure in March 2026 far exceed those seen in the early days of the war in Ukraine. While the monthly rise in a litre of petrol is bad enough, the jump in the cost of diesel is even harder to swallow at 40p a litre." He further noted that with long-term RAC research indicating eight-in-10 people are dependent on their vehicles, these escalating costs are placing significant strain on both households and businesses across the nation.
Practical Advice for Motorists
In response to the soaring prices, motorists are being urged to adopt fuel-efficient driving practices. Recommendations include reducing speed by 10 per cent to improve fuel efficiency while maintaining traffic flow, and anticipating road conditions such as traffic lights and roundabouts to avoid continuous harsh braking. AA president Edmund King advised, "It is well worth drivers adapting their driving style and speed both to save money and enhance safety. We estimate that diesel drivers can save £10 per tank by changing their driving style." These measures aim to alleviate some of the financial burden faced by drivers during this challenging period.
