Households with smart meters could benefit from cheaper or even free electricity this summer under a new scheme designed to prevent the grid being overwhelmed by excess renewable energy.
The National Energy System Operator (NESO) has announced the Demand Flexibility Service, which will incentivise customers to use energy at times of surplus, such as sunny or windy weekends. Personal finance expert Iona Bain explained on BBC Morning Live that the scheme rewards households for running appliances like washing machines or charging electric cars when generation exceeds demand.
To qualify, homes must have a smart meter installed and be supplied by an energy provider participating in the scheme. Rewards vary: some suppliers may offer free electricity, others reduced rates or gift card points. NESO will notify companies when to activate the service.
Deborah Petterson, NESO's director of resilience and emergency management, said the tool strengthens network resilience while rewarding flexible use. Jess Ralston from the Energy and Climate Intelligence Unit added that increased renewables are driving down wholesale prices, creating potential bargains for consumers.
Smart meters are installed free by contacting your supplier, though some homes may face delays due to poor signal. The move comes as Britain expects to generate more power than it can use during summer months, thanks to longer days and higher solar output.
