As autumn approaches, gardeners are battling persistent weeds that refuse to die. Michael Griffiths, a popular gardening expert on TikTok, has shared a simple homemade weed killer using two common kitchen ingredients: distilled vinegar and bicarbonate of soda.
In a video, Griffiths explained that the vinegar acts as a herbicide, while the bicarbonate of soda enhances its effectiveness. He advised adding the bicarbonate slowly to the vinegar to avoid excessive fizzing, and mixing until the solution becomes clear. The recommended ratio is two parts vinegar to one part bicarbonate.
Griffiths addressed concerns that the mixture neutralises itself, clarifying that a 2:1 ratio leaves a salty, acidic solution that degrades quickly in soil without long-term harm. He suggested using the spray on young weeds for best results, giving them a thorough soaking.
Other gardeners have shared their own variations, adding a splash of washing-up liquid or a teaspoon of salt to help the mixture stick to plants. While commercial weed killers are widely available, this natural alternative offers an effective and eco-friendly option.
