Shadow Energy Secretary Claire Coutinho has criticised Labour's energy policies, claiming they cause suffering and endanger national security. Writing for the Express, she argues that shutting down domestic fuel production does not reduce demand but increases reliance on imports from countries with lower environmental standards.
Conservative Stance on Energy Security
Under Kemi Badenoch's leadership, the Conservatives view the oil and gas industry as integral to national security. Coutinho questions why the UK should import oil from Russia or Qatar when it can be extracted at home. She highlights the election of a Conservative MP in Aberdeen South as evidence that voters understand the importance of the sector.
Impact of Labour's Policies
Coutinho asserts that Labour's ban on new oil and gas licences and high taxes have pushed marginal tax rates above 100% for some companies, causing a crisis. She warns that the UK is becoming more dependent on foreign imports, losing 1,000 jobs monthly, and leaving £25 billion in tax receipts untapped.
She contrasts the UK's lack of exploration wells in 2024 with Norway's 49 wells and 21 discoveries, emphasising the missed opportunities. Coutinho also criticises the SNP for supporting Labour's policies, which she describes as misguided ideology.
Consequences for Aberdeen
Once the oil and gas capital of Europe, Aberdeen is now suffering under Ed Miliband's climate policies, according to Coutinho. She notes that Douglas Lumsden, who spent two decades in the industry, won the Aberdeen South by-election as a Conservative champion.
Conservative Plan for Recovery
Coutinho outlines the Conservative plan: end Labour's ban on new licences, scrap the windfall tax, and fast-track approvals for Rosebank and Jackdaw gas fields. She also calls for repealing the Climate Change Act, expanding nuclear power, and implementing the Cheap Power Plan to reduce electricity bills by 20% for businesses and £200 for households.
She concludes that Aberdeen's message is clear: support British oil and gas, workers, and energy security, which only the Conservatives can deliver.
