Thousands of EDF customers will receive free electricity for six hours today, Saturday, July 4, 2026, between 10am and 4pm. The offer applies to households signed up to EDF's FreePhase time-of-use tariffs, which provide free electricity when there is an excess of renewable energy generation and lower demand on the national grid.
How the Free Electricity Offer Works
All FreePhase customers, whether on the Dynamic or Static tariff, can run appliances, charge electric vehicles, and power their homes without paying for electricity during the six-hour window. In June, 28 free hours were already delivered to customers. The initiative aims to help consumers take advantage of high renewable generation periods while shifting energy use away from peak times.
FreePhase Tariff Pricing Bands
The FreePhase tariff uses a three-band pricing system: Green (11pm to 6am) is super off-peak, Amber (6am to 4pm and 7pm to 11pm) is off-peak, and Red (4pm to 7pm) is peak. Customers can choose FreePhase Dynamic, where rates change daily based on wholesale prices, or FreePhase Static, with rates fixed for 12 months.
Customer Savings and Benefits
EDF reported that customers on the FreePhase Dynamic tariff saved an average of £112 during the first three months of 2026 compared to the Standard Variable Tariff. Off-peak electricity is on average 28% cheaper, and overnight rates are around 40% lower. Callum Morgan, Product Design Expert for Smart Tariffs, said: "FreePhase is our innovative new tariff shaking up how our customers think about their energy usage and put savings in their control! Tomorrow we’re giving six hours of free electricity, showing how customers can directly benefit from changing wholesale prices, and by shifting more electricity out of the peak, they can save even more."
Impact on Energy Consumption
As the energy system transitions to cleaner, more flexible electricity, FreePhase offers households access to cheaper off-peak prices, helping them make the most of their supply when it matters.
