A simple five-second task involving your curtains could increase your home's temperature by up to 10 degrees Celsius, according to specialists at All the Home. The technique involves opening curtains during the day to let in sunlight and closing them before sunset to trap the heat.
Natural sunlight can warm walls, floors and furnishings, creating a greenhouse effect that captures additional heat indoors. This method is particularly effective in rooms with south-facing or west-facing windows, which receive more direct sunlight during the day.
The experts advise opening curtains in late morning when sunlight is strongest, then drawing them shut in early evening as darkness falls. This routine can cut heat loss by nearly 25%, reducing reliance on central heating systems.
To maximise the effect, homeowners should ensure windows are clean, remove any furniture blocking sunlight, and consider pale-coloured carpets or furnishings, as lighter shades reflect heat more effectively. Maintaining a home temperature of 18-20C is recommended for health and to prevent pipes freezing.
