Working parents in England have just days left to apply for up to 30 hours of funded childcare per week, a scheme that could save families as much as £7,500 a year. The Department for Education's Childcare Choices campaign warns that the next deadline is August 31, 2025, for parents of children who turn nine months old between April 1 and August 31, 2025.
The expansion doubles the current 15-hour offer and is being rolled out in stages. Those already receiving 15 hours will have their existing codes automatically upgraded, provided they reconfirm eligibility and their provider confirms new attendance patterns. New applicants must check eligibility and apply via the Childcare Choices website.
Education Secretary Bridget Phillipson said: 'Giving every child the best start in life is my number one priority, which is why we are delivering on our commitment to provide hundreds of thousands of children with 30 hours of government-funded early education.' She urged all eligible parents to take up the offer.
However, parents should note that the funded hours do not cover consumables such as nappies, meals, and wipes, which nurseries often charge separately. Some parents have reported that their overall bills have increased despite the extra hours, as nurseries adjust fees for additional services.
The scheme applies to children from nine months old until they reach school age. For those missing the August deadline, the next cutoff is December 31, 2025, for children turning nine months between September 1 and December 31. Childcare Choices recommends applying at least six weeks before the deadline.
