End of an Era: Newcastle Bus Driver Retires After 49 Years
Newcastle Bus Driver Retires After 49 Years

Ray James, one of the region's longest-serving bus drivers, has parked up for the final time after clocking up almost half a century of miles. For 49 years, Ray has been a familiar face for passengers travelling around Newcastle.

The 70-year-old began his journey in the bus industry on August 31, 1976, when he joined the Tyne and Wear Passenger Executive, before continuing his career with Stagecoach at the company's Slatyford Depot. Over the years, Ray became a respected member of the team, spending the majority of his career driving buses across Newcastle and supporting the smooth running of the depot.

Beyond Driving: A Trusted Colleague

As well as being a highly experienced driver, Ray was also the person many colleagues turned to when they needed help with repairs to the depot's cash dispensers. He was always ready to lend a hand and share his knowledge. Now he will be a huge miss as he retires after an impressive 49 years.

Stephen Bennett, Operations Manager at Stagecoach's Slatyford Depot, said: "Ray was a pleasure to work with and will be greatly missed by everyone at Slatyford. He has always been happy, friendly and approachable, making time for colleagues and offering support whenever it was needed. His commitment over almost five decades is a fantastic achievement and a testament to the positive impact he has had on so many people during his career."

A Life Beyond the Wheel

Ray was raised in the Scotswood area of Newcastle before later moving to Kingston Park. Outside of work, he enjoys spending time with his family and is a devoted grandfather. He has also enjoyed a lifelong passion for horses, having owned a horse himself and teaching his daughter to ride, as well as enjoying walking his dog. Stagecoach colleagues at Slatyford Depot wish Ray all the very best for a happy and well-earned retirement.
