A single mother from Essex, Julie, who lives on just £59 a week, was brought to tears after a wealthy couple offered to back her business dream and bought a bed for her daughter. The emotional moment unfolded on Channel 5's programme Rich House, Poor House.
Julie's Struggles
Julie, a single mum of two grown-up daughters, lives in a modest semi-detached house in Halstead, Essex. Space is so tight that her daughter Chloe sleeps on the sofa in the lounge. Julie previously ran a successful doggy daycare business, but it was forced to close during the pandemic. Now working at a care home, she has a weekly budget of just £59 and mounting debt. Her dream of starting a new business has been put on hold.
The Millionaire Couple
Julie and her daughters swapped homes with 36-year-old entrepreneur Jazz and his partner Catia, who live in a five-bedroom property in Romford with a garden and steam room. Jazz previously ran a £3 million football business with 150 employees, which he sold in 2020 to launch a consultancy. He now teaches others how to increase their earnings. Despite his wealth, Jazz grew up in a cramped West London terrace.
During the swap, Jazz and Catia lived on a £59 weekly budget, while Julie and her daughters had £1,200 to spend. When they reunited, Jazz and Catia revealed their plan to help Julie launch a business. Knowing Julie's ambition to run a pub, Jazz proposed a hospitality venture where Julie could hire space, organise activities for the elderly, and serve simple meals. They offered to help set up her first event, leaving Julie in tears.
Catia asked: "So how would you feel if we helped you out at the first event together?" Julie was speechless and broke down. Jazz added: "I'd love to just pave out that road map for you and go through that journey with you and help you to set up that first event."
Further Generosity
The couple also bought Chloe a bed and transformed the conservatory into a living space for the family. Julie, overwhelmed, said: "It's so kind of you to do that for me when you don't even know me."
Rich House, Poor House is available to stream on Channel 5.
