Police Warn Public to Stay Away from Derelict Hartwood Hospital

Police Scotland and the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service have issued a joint warning urging the public, particularly young people, to stay away from abandoned and derelict buildings, including the former Hartwood Hospital site, following recent reports of individuals entering unsafe structures. These buildings present significant dangers due to structural instability, hidden hazards and the risk of serious injury.

Emergency Services Respond to Incidents

Emergency services have repeatedly attended incidents where individuals have become trapped, injured or placed in danger after entering unsecured or condemned properties. Sergeant Chris Grey of the Wishaw and Shotts Community Policing team stated: “Derelict sites like Hartwood Hospital may seem interesting or adventurous but they are extremely dangerous. Floors can collapse without warning, debris can fall, and hazardous materials are often present.”

Impact on Resources and Community

Sergeant Grey added: “Entering these buildings not only puts lives at risk but also places a significant strain on emergency services who must respond when things go wrong. We are asking parents and carers to speak with young people about the risks and to help us keep our communities safe.”
