Michael Carrick's turnaround at Manchester United after taking over in January saw the club finish third in the Premier League, but sustaining that momentum requires further transfer business.
Done Deals This Summer
United have completed several outgoings: Rasmus Hojlund to Napoli (£38m) via a loan clause, Andre Onana loaned back to Trabzonspor, and Casemiro, Tyrell Malacia and Jadon Sancho all released. However, the club has not yet negotiated a single transfer exit beyond those moves.
Incomings include Youri Tielemans from Aston Villa (£35m), Andrey Santos from Chelsea (£50m), Karl Darlow on a free, Tynan Thompson from Tottenham (£8m) and Kit Margetson for a compensation fee. Tielemans is seen as a ready-made Premier League performer, while Santos offers potential.
Outs Still Needed
Altay Bayindir needs a permanent move back to Turkey after Onana's loan. Radek Vitek, valued at £10m after impressing on loan at Bristol City, could generate funds. Joshua Zirkzee, with nine goals in 75 appearances since a £36.5m move, is available and Juventus are interested.
Marcus Rashford remains a United player after a move to Barcelona fell through. His £325,000-a-week contract, with two years left, has hindered his exit. He rejected moves to Fenerbahce and Galatasaray, and United do not want to sell to a Premier League rival.
Further Incomings Required
Carrick wants another midfielder after Casemiro's departure and Manuel Ugarte's injury scuppered a summer move. Targets include Brighton's Carlos Baleba, Bournemouth's Alex Scott, and Manu Kone of Roma, who has agreed personal terms but Roma want £51m. United are negotiating slowly.
A versatile attacker is also sought after the exits of Sancho and Alejandro Garnacho, and potential loss of Rashford. Options like Bryan Mbeumo, Benjamin Sesko and Matheus Cunha were successes last summer, but Crysencio Summerville joined Al-Hilal and Antoine Semenyo joined Manchester City.
At left-back, Luke Shaw is the only senior player after Malacia's departure and Patrick Dorgu's shift to attack. Targets include Fulham's Antonee Robinson and Newcastle's Lewis Hall, but selling clubs may be reluctant.
