Manchester United's summer transfer plans have been dealt a significant setback after Manuel Ugarte suffered a serious knee ligament injury at the World Cup, potentially sidelining him for an extended period. The club confirmed the injury last night, and The Athletic reports that his expected absence will impact United's summer transfer strategy, as he was earmarked for a potential exit. Transfermarkt values Ugarte at €25m (£21m), a fee United may no longer be able to rely on for reinvestment.
Midfield Reinforcements Targeted
Midfield remains the priority for United, with Ederson already set to join from Atalanta in a £38.8m deal. However, the club is seeking at least one more addition. West Ham United's Mateus Fernandes continues to be a primary target, but a gap in valuation persists. According to The Times, United are refusing to meet Fernandes' £80m asking price, while Tottenham Hotspur are leading the race, having shown willingness to meet both the fee and wage demands.
Ayyoub Bouaddi Emerges as Alternative
Lille and Morocco teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi has emerged as an alternative to Fernandes. RMC journalist Fabrice Hawkins reports that United face competition from Manchester City, Arsenal, and Bayern Munich for the 18-year-old. Lille value Bouaddi between €80m (£69m) and €100m (£86m), though strong performances for Morocco at the World Cup could inflate that price. Lille are open to selling but prefer a loan-back arrangement for the 2025-26 season to aid his development.
Player Sales Key to Funding
To afford such high fees, United have relied on player sales. Marcus Rashford remains a potential departure, but Ugarte's injury complicates matters. The Uruguayan midfielder, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain in 2023, was expected to be sold to raise funds. His injury now leaves United with fewer options to generate cash for new signings.
