Lidl's first-ever pub descended into chaos just hours after opening its doors, as a violent brawl erupted among customers, leaving one man hospitalized. The supermarket giant's The Middle Ale pub in Dundonald, Belfast, opened for business for the first time on Thursday, but by late evening, police were called to the scene.
Altercation Leads to Hospitalization
A man was taken to hospital following what police described as an "altercation" outside The Middle Ale bar. The Police Service of Northern Ireland (PSNI) received a report of an assault at approximately 11:20 pm on Thursday, June 18. Officers attended the scene on Dunlady Road, where two men were involved in the dispute. The injured man was treated for injuries that were not believed to be serious.
Lidl's Statement on the Incident
Lidl Northern Ireland released a statement confirming that a group of customers were "politely asked to leave" after last orders were called. The situation escalated, leading to an altercation between the group. Security personnel assisted in the prompt removal of the individuals, and the PSNI supported in ensuring their full removal from the site. Lidl emphasized a zero-tolerance approach to disorderly behavior, stating that the safety of employees and customers is of utmost importance.
Viral Video Captures the Scene
A video clip of the incident circulated widely on social media, appearing to capture the brawl as it unfolded. The PSNI has appealed for any witnesses to come forward as investigations continue.
The Middle Ale: A Unique Concept
The Middle Ale, which opened earlier that day, is a pub with an attached off-licence shop, located next to the existing Lidl store in Dundonald. The project represents Lidl's innovative approach to navigating Northern Ireland's stringent alcohol licensing regulations. In the region, alcohol licences are strictly regulated and can only be obtained by purchasing them from establishments that are closing or no longer wish to sell alcohol. Applicants must also demonstrate an "inadequacy" of provision in the locality.
After failing to prove there were insufficient off-licences in the Dundonald area, Lidl shifted strategy and applied for a pub licence instead, arguing that there were not enough drinking establishments in the vicinity. Following a lengthy process, including overcoming a legal challenge in court, Lidl secured a licence to serve alcohol in a pub with an adjoining off-sales area.
A Tribute to the Middle Aisle
The 60-seat establishment's name, The Middle Ale, pays homage to Lidl's famous Middle Aisle, known for its range of discounted supermarket goods. The pub's launch marks a significant milestone for the supermarket chain, despite the unfortunate incident on its opening day.
