Harry Amass has returned to Carrington for pre-season visibly stronger, having spent the summer in the gym. The 18-year-old left-back is determined to seize what could be a major opportunity at Manchester United this season.
Physical transformation and opportunity
Amass has bulked up significantly, addressing a key concern from former manager Erik ten Hag, who felt the youngster was too small for the first team. Ten Hag took a 17-year-old Amass on tour in 2024 and was impressed but never gave him a senior debut. Under Ruben Amorim, Amass eventually made seven first-team appearances, totalling 325 minutes.
With Luke Shaw as United's only senior left-back and his contract expiring at the end of the season, Amass sees a chance to force his way into Michael Carrick's plans. United have scouted potential signings, including Newcastle's Lewis Hall, but Amass could change those plans with strong performances.
Loan spells and injury setback
Amass spent the first half of last season on loan at Sheffield Wednesday, where he excelled despite the club's turmoil. In January, he returned to United and joined Norwich City, aiming to play for a promotion-chasing side. However, he played just 15 minutes for the Canaries before a hamstring injury ended his season, costing him six months of development.
“It was character-building at Sheffield Wednesday,” a source close to the player said. “The injury at Norwich was unfortunate, but he’s fully recovered and ready to prove himself.”
Pre-season fixtures and squad depth
Amass will get opportunities in pre-season, starting with a match against Wrexham in Helsinki and then facing Rosenborg in Trondheim. If he impresses, he could secure a place in the squad for the upcoming season. With United back in the Champions League, Carrick will need depth, and Patrick Dorgu, another left-back option, has been thriving on the wing under Carrick.
This summer feels like a pivotal moment for the academy graduate, and his physical transformation signals he is determined to take it.
