Major UK banks and high street retailers have announced a wave of branch and store closures across the country in the coming weeks. Halifax is shutting 15 branches, TGJones is closing its Southend-on-Sea store, and Bar + Block is closing all 20 of its UK and Northern Ireland sites, among others.
Retail and banking closures hit the high street
Analysis of Valuation Office Agency figures revealed that over 6,000 retail premises have vanished from communities throughout England and Wales in the last five years. This stands in stark contrast to the more than 13 retail stores opening each week over the past year.
Changing customer habits, rising operating costs, and the surge in online shopping have made it difficult for businesses to keep their doors open.
Bodean's closes all restaurants
Bodean's, a London-based barbecue restaurant chain established in 2002, has confirmed its three restaurants are “currently closed”. The company's website displays a notice apologising “for any inconvenience caused by the closure of its Soho, Tower Hill and Camden locations”, expressing hope to welcome diners back at some point in the future.
The complete message stated: “We're currently closed. We sincerely apologise for any inconvenience this may cause and would like to thank you for your continued support and loyalty. We appreciate your understanding during this time and hope to welcome you again in the future.”
TGJones and Bar + Block closures
TGJones, a UK stationery retailer, has begun a substantial closing-down sale at its Southend-on-Sea outlet, as the shop is due to shut on September 26, with customers also bidding farewell to the Post Office. A spokesperson for TGJones said: “As part of our work to secure the long-term future of TG Jones, we have confirmed that our Southend store will close. We appreciate this will be disappointing news for our colleagues, customers and the local community. Our priority now is on supporting those affected colleagues while continuing to serve our customers until the store closes. We would like to thank our colleagues in Southend for their valued contribution to TG Jones.”
Bar + Block, a steakhouse brand under Whitbread, is set to close all 20 of its UK and Northern Ireland sites permanently on Thursday, September 3. Patrons were sent an email this week confirming the final trading day, stating: “We have some important news to share about the future of our restaurants. As you may have seen, we have recently announced changes to our business, which are resulting in the closure of our Branded Restaurants. This means that on Thursday, September 3, 2026, all UK and Northern Ireland Bar + Block restaurants will be closed. From all of us at Bar + Block, thank you for being a valued customer.”
Halifax, Lloyds Bank and NatWest branch closures
Halifax is shutting 15 branches throughout the UK in the coming 10 weeks, as the Halifax brand transitions to Lloyds. The Civil Service Pensioners' Alliance warned that the closures are “creating real barriers to everyday financial independence” for thousands of pensioners, highlighting that many still depend on in-person banking services.
Lloyds Bank and NatWest have also announced further branch closures in August. Both major banks have stated that the vast majority of their customers now favour online banking and digital services over conducting transactions in person at branches.
