DWP Loans Up to £812 for Benefit Claimants Over Two Years

The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) offers Budgeting Advances of up to £812 for Universal Credit claimants with children, repayable interest-free over 24 months. More than 8.3 million people across Great Britain currently claim Universal Credit, and many struggle with rent, food, and energy costs despite benefit increases earlier this year.

Budgeting Advances: Amounts and Eligibility

Universal Credit claimants can apply for a Budgeting Advance to cover emergency or unexpected costs, such as furniture, household items, work-related expenses, rent in advance, emergency travel, or replacing essential appliances. The minimum loan is £100. Maximum amounts are: £348 for single claimants, £464 for couples, and £812 for claimants with children. The loan is interest-free but must be repaid within 24 months through future Universal Credit payments. Claimants usually need to have received Universal Credit for at least six months, though exceptions apply.

Hardship Payments for Sanctioned Claimants

Claimants whose Universal Credit is reduced due to a sanction may apply for a hardship payment to cover basic living costs like food, heating, or hygiene items. These payments are not automatic and require proof that the household would face hardship without the money. The amount must normally be repaid.

Discretionary Housing Payments

Local councils administer Discretionary Housing Payments (DHPs) to help with rent shortfalls, benefit cap pressures, or housing support reductions. Eligibility varies by council. In Scotland, claimants can find details on mygov.scot; in England, on GOV.UK.

Household Support Fund and Local Welfare Schemes

Many councils in Scotland and England run local welfare schemes, including the Household Support Fund in England and the Scottish Welfare Fund (Crisis Grants and Community Care Grants) in Scotland. Support may include supermarket vouchers, fuel vouchers, emergency cash, help with white goods, or school clothing grants.

New Claim Advances

New Universal Credit claimants can request an advance payment while waiting for their first payment, which typically takes around five weeks. The advance must be repaid through future payments.

Citizens Advice urges people struggling financially to seek help early, as some schemes have limited budgets or time restrictions.
