A former Marks and Spencer employee has revealed the optimal times to visit the supermarket for yellow sticker discounts, offering a way to save money on food without the usual anxiety over costs. Katherine McPhillips, who worked in the M&S bakery while at university, shared her insider knowledge on when to find the best reductions.
Best time to visit for yellow sticker discounts
Contrary to popular belief, visiting just before closing time is often the least productive moment for bargains. McPhillips explained that during her tenure, yellow stickers were typically applied during calmer periods, often by overnight staff after the store closed. Therefore, the best time to find deals is first thing in the morning, around 9am when the store opens.
Another ideal window is late afternoon, between 3pm and 5pm, when shift changes occur and incoming staff begin marking down prices. Arriving at around 4pm is particularly worthwhile, as many lunchtime items like sandwiches and salads receive reductions.
Staff behaviour and courtesy
McPhillips noted that her manager instructed staff to stop applying yellow stickers if customers started gathering around waiting for them. Large crowds can obstruct aisles and sometimes lead to disrespectful behaviour, such as grabbing items from staff hands. She emphasised the importance of giving staff space and being courteous to allow them to work without interruption.
Each M&S branch may operate slightly differently, so markdown times can vary. McPhillips suggested visiting during less busy periods and politely asking a staff member when yellow-sticker products are typically made available. A bit of politeness can go a long way, easing the workload for shop workers and potentially helping customers secure deals.
