A 38-year-old driver has been charged after allegedly running over a 15-year-old boy on an e-bike in a road rage incident in Sydney's northern suburbs. The confrontation occurred at the intersection of Abbott and Pitt roads in North Curl Curl around 4:30 pm on Monday.
According to police reports, the driver of a Volkswagen SUV allegedly made an offensive hand gesture toward a group of teenagers on e-bikes and threw a water bottle at one of them before driving away. A 15-year-old boy then threw the same water bottle back at the car, but missed. The teenager followed the SUV and blocked it at the intersection, which allegedly prompted the driver to ram into him.
Footage from the scene shows the vehicle reversing, revealing the teenager trapped underneath. The boy, lying on the grass verge near his bike, was heard yelling, "He ran me over. He ran me straight over." Two off-duty police officers and several members of the public rushed to help the teenager and attempted to stop the driver, but the driver fled the scene.
The 15-year-old was airlifted to hospital with serious leg injuries and is reported to be in a stable condition. A local resident told 9News, "It's just a shocking thing to happen in a quiet street like this, especially involving a young kid on a bike."
The alleged driver later presented himself at Dee Why Police Station and was transferred to Manly Police Station. He has been charged with driving furiously in a motor vehicle causing bodily harm, negligent driving, and driving while a licence application has been refused. He was granted strict conditional bail and is scheduled to appear in court next month.
