Angela Patrone, Senior Lifestyle Reporter, conducted a taste test comparing Sainsbury's cheapest and most expensive carbonara ready meals. The budget option, Sainsbury's Italian Style Spaghetti Carbonara, costs £3.75 for 400g (94p per 100g), while the premium Taste The Difference Pancetta & Three Cheese Carbonara costs £4.85 for 375g (£1.29 per 100g). The premium version emerged as the clear winner with a rating of 8/10, compared to 6/10 for the budget option.
Preparation and Ingredients
Both meals require four minutes in the microwave or 30 minutes in the oven. Patrone opted for the oven method, noting that ready meals tend to cook more successfully this way. The budget carbonara includes bacon lardons, while the premium version uses pancetta, whole milk, and Parmigiano Reggiano cheese. The premium dish also features three cheeses, enhancing its flavour profile.
Taste Test Results
The budget carbonara had an excessive amount of sauce relative to pasta, and the sauce lacked depth of flavour. Patrone noted that the cheese flavour was barely detectable, which was disappointing for a carbonara. In contrast, the premium version had a spot-on sauce-to-pasta ratio, and the cheese was genuinely detectable, resulting in a considerably superior flavour. The pancetta quantity was slightly lacking, but the sauce compensated.
Value for Money
Despite the £1.10 price difference, Patrone concluded that the premium Taste The Difference carbonara wins on the strength of its sauce alone. She stated, "If I were to purchase one again from these two options, the Sainsbury's Pancetta & Three Cheese Carbonara would win out on the strength of its sauce alone." The budget option, while affordable, did not deliver the expected cheesy richness.
Overall Verdict
Ready meals divide opinion due to convenience versus health concerns. However, Patrone found that the premium Sainsbury's carbonara is a gem worth buying when pressed for time. The test highlights that paying extra can significantly improve taste and quality in ready meals.
