A 'super rare' 50p coin is sparking huge interest online, with collectors claiming it could be worth up to £40,000. The coin in question is the 2020 Brexit 50p piece, but you'll need to spot a tiny detail to distinguish the valuable version from the common one.
According to @CoinCollectingWizard, a TikTok user with 270,000 followers, the key is the date on the coin. He stated: '£40,000 for this 50p, yeah that's right £40,000 but you must pay attention on what to look for.'
How to Spot the Rare £40,000 Brexit 50p Coin Error
The common version of the Brexit 50p, minted in millions, bears the date 31 January 2020. However, due to multiple Brexit delays, the Royal Mint produced coins with three different dates: 29 March 2019, 31 October 2019, and 31 January 2020. The final circulating version features the correct exit date, but error coins with earlier dates are extremely rare.
@CoinCollectingWizard explained: 'If you find the Brexit 50p coin in your change which is most likely as millions were minted for circulation then all you need to do is check the date at the bottom of the coin. If your date says 31st January 2020 then this is just the regular common version worth 50p. But if you are super lucky and find one with a date other than 2020 such as this one from October 2019, then you have just found a super rare error coin and yes it is been known to sell for £40,000.'
Online Buzz and Collector Interest
Following the clip being shared online, it attracted significant interest. One commenter stated: 'I've got six of these coins.' Another commented: 'I've got one!' The official 2020 Brexit 50p piece carries special importance as it commemorates a pivotal political milestone in British history. The inscription states: 'Peace, prosperity and friendship with all nations' accompanied by the historic departure date of 31 January 2020.
How to Value and Verify Rare UK Coins
Identifying a rare coin involves examining its date, mint marks, physical state and distinctive errors. AI-enabled smartphones can photograph a coin and immediately provide identification along with estimated values. Generally, lower production numbers indicate a 'key date' and higher value. Double dies, missing mint marks or erroneous dates can make coins exceptionally rare. You can seek professional advice from Change Checker or auction houses who can verify the authenticity of your coins. To get a clearer picture of what collectors are willing to pay, it is also worth browsing through the completed sales listings on eBay.
