10 Budget-Friendly Dresses for Royal Ascot from Top Brands

Royal Ascot is well underway, and one shopping writer took to the high street to find the best budget-friendly dresses fit for the races.

Summer is finally set to arrive in the UK this week, with the solstice, the longest day of the year, occurring on Sunday, June 21. To make the most of the sunshine, many of us have social calendars filled with fun events like Wimbledon and horse races.

Royal Ascot is arguably the most famous racing event in the UK, with senior members of the royal family typically in attendance. Currently underway from Tuesday, June 16 to Saturday, June 20, The Prince and Princess of Wales, alongside Zara and Mike Tindall, have all been spotted at Ascot Racecourse wearing their best formal daywear.

For such events, a sophisticated dress that is typically midi or maxi in length is required. While some look to the back of their wardrobe for last year's wedding guest outfits, many will head to the high street to find a new look that makes them feel great and comfortable.

Ascot typically employs a stringent dress code for both men and women. Ladies require a headpiece or hat, not a fascinator, for the Royal and Queen Anne & Village Enclosures, with the remaining enclosures encouraging smart attire.

For those who haven't yet found their perfect dress, I headed to my nearest high street to find lovely options in a range of styles. From River Island, Marks and Spencer, and Nobody's Child to Next and Sister Jane, here are the options I found.

Phase Eight Matilda Yellow Dress - £149

The Phase Eight Matilda dress not only looked lovely but felt so nice on. It was lightweight, breathable thanks to its linen blend fabric, and silky soft. Its details were chic, with beautiful ruffle detailing on the bodice adding romantic flair and a V-neck with a flattering wrap style. The waist cinches in with a fabric tie before floating out to a dreamy A-line skirt that moved gracefully. Coming in a gorgeous lemon yellow colourway, it works with a range of accessories. The only drawback is that linen may crease easily.

Nobody's Child Butter Yellow Embroidered Pleated Nova Midi Dress - £169

Sticking with the yellow theme, this Elizabeth Scarlett dress from Nobody's Child is a delicate yet statement frock. It features pretty embroidery, puffball sleeves, a flattering square neckline, and a pleated bodice. It also has a shirred back for comfort and pockets. The only drawback is that it seems to be available in only one length.

Nobody's Child Pink Reign Midi Dress - £140

Hailed as 'simple yet striking', this Reign midi dress is a lovely option for warm race days thanks to its airy, sleeveless design. With a crew neckline, it is fitted and has an open criss-cross design at the back. The front has seams that create a shaping fit, skimming the body and floating into a skirt. My usual size was a bit too big, so it may be best to size down. It also comes in four other colours.

M&S Mesh Checked Midi Dropped Waist Dress - £45

For shoppers who prioritise comfort alongside style, this dress is the perfect blend. Available in sizes six to 24, it is stretchy and has ruching on the bodice that hides lumps and bumps while slimming the waist. The drop waist is flattering, complemented by a rounded neckline and racer-style sleeves. Being mostly white, it is fully lined. It is also available in three lengths.

M&S Floral Round Neck Midi Column Dress - £55

This floral column dress is one of my favourite options. The colour is stunning, a light olive or dark pistachio, beautifully contrasted by electric blue flowers on its chiffon top layer. It has a cowl drape that is flattering on the back before gliding into a bias-cut midi skirt. It may cling to problem areas if slightly snug, so I sized up.

River Island White Short Sleeve Polka Dot Maxi Dress - £39

Polka dots aren't going anywhere, and this under £50 dress from River Island looks way more expensive thanks to its voluminous Godet skirt that creates an hourglass silhouette. It has a high boat-style neckline and gathering at the hips. Made from stretchy fabric, it isn't the easiest to slip on and off. It also comes in a brown colourway with sky blue dots.

River Island Cream Floral Scallop Trim Wide Leg Trousers and Waistcoat - £32 and £36

Not everyone favours a dress. This two-piece from River Island is a lovely option, romantic with watercolour style flowers and scallop edging, yet comfortable. Due to its high neck, it may gape at the bust in some sizes.

Nobody's Child Light Blue Gingham Sleeveless Starlight Midi Dress - £89

This dress may look casual but can be dressed up with a hat and heels. It is unbelievably flattering on all figures, with a waist panel that creates a cinched waist. The V-neckline isn't too deep, and it has pockets. Made from 100% cotton seersucker, it is lightweight and breathable. Some found sizing slightly large, but it fit me perfectly.

Sister Jane Pistachio Jacquard Mini Dress - £89

This mini dress is perfect for those who love drama, with a billowing skirt and sleeves. Decorated in metallic floral swirls, the sleeves are a real statement. It would look great with metallic shoes and bold earrings.

Next Kew Collection Yellow Floral Printed High Neck Tiered Occasion Maxi Dress - £55

For those who love whimsical, ruffled styles, this Next dress designed with the Royal Botanic Gardens is effortlessly elegant with a bohemian edge. It has a refined high-neck ruffle detail, cinched waistband, and flowing tiered skirt. It comes up large, so best to size down.
