Millions of people in the UK need a TV Licence to watch live TV, use streaming services, or watch BBC iPlayer on any device, including a TV, computer, laptop, phone, tablet, games console or digital box. However, some people may be eligible for a free or discounted licence.
A TV Licence costs £180 for colour TV, and most people spread the cost with a Direct Debit from £15 per month. Only one licence is needed per household, even if multiple devices are used, and it covers everyone living at the address. Watching or recording live TV without a licence can lead to a fine of up to £1,000.
Who is eligible for a free TV Licence?
People aged 75 or over who receive Pension Credit, or live with a partner who receives Pension Credit, can get a free TV Licence. Guidance on the TV Licensing website says: "If you already receive Pension Credit, you can apply for your free licence when you are 74 years old. We’ll update your payments to cover you until your 75th birthday, and then you'll be covered by your free licence. We’ll confirm this in writing."
Those in residential care or sheltered accommodation can get a TV Licence for £7.50 if they are retired and over 60, or disabled. The housing manager can check eligibility and apply on their behalf. A 50% discount is available for people registered blind or those who live with someone who is, provided the licence is in the blind person's name. If it is not, a new application can be made to transfer it.
How to apply and latest advice
Applications for a free licence can be made online at www.tvlicensing.co.uk or by phone at 0300 790 6071. TV Licensing said: "We know that some customers find paying for a licence difficult, and we want to do everything we can to help. If you have a question about your payments, please contact us as soon as possible to talk about what to do next."
TV Licensing also said it operates "a fleet of vans equipped with advanced detection tools" that can identify TV receiving equipment at targeted addresses within minutes. Most people spread the cost by paying by Direct Debit, with payments made automatically, or they can make a one-off payment. A renewal reminder may be sent by post, email, or text before the licence expires. The licence starts on the day it is bought and lasts for up to a year.
