Rising grocery prices are driving more Americans to consider warehouse clubs like Costco, Sam’s Club, and BJ’s Wholesale Club. These chains offer competitive prices on bulk items, cheaper gas, and perks such as cash-back rewards. Annual memberships range from $50 to $130, with basic and upgraded tiers available.
According to Clay Cary, senior trends analyst at CouponFollow, bulk purchases of items like paper towels, pasta, and snacks can lead to significant savings. “If you were buying for a family or just trying to stretch your money, these items would add up quickly,” he said. However, shoppers must calculate per-unit costs as sizes and quantities vary.
Gas savings alone can justify a membership. Brady Lochte, a financial advisor at Axon Capital Management, noted that warehouse club gas stations typically offer savings of 10 to 25 cents per gallon. For someone filling up a 15-gallon tank weekly, that amounts to $1.50 to $3.75 per fill-up, or $72 to $180 annually.
But warehouse clubs are not for everyone. Cary warned that spending $40 on a bulk package of toilet paper can be difficult for those on tight budgets. “Unless you're careful, you can easily blow your budget on things you don’t need with those large shopping carts,” he said. Lochte added that smaller households may struggle to use bulk perishables before they spoil, and a vehicle is necessary to transport bulky items.
Before signing up, experts advise reviewing shopping habits, comparing prices, and estimating yearly savings after the membership fee. Ensure your budget can cover upfront bulk costs and that purchases suit your household size and storage space.
