Urgent Recalls for Chocolate, Meat and Seven Popular Toys

Urgent product recall warnings have been issued this week for several popular food items and children's toys, with authorities alerting consumers to significant health risks. The Food Standards Agency has targeted specific chocolate and meat products, while the Office for Product Safety and Standards has recalled seven toys from a major retailer due to potential asbestos contamination.

Food Standards Agency Issues Critical Warnings

The Food Standards Agency has taken action against two food products that pose serious health threats. Customers are advised to check their purchases immediately and follow disposal instructions to avoid potential illness or allergic reactions.

M&M's Chocolate Recall Over Allergen Concerns

M&M's Pipoca (popcorn) chocolate has been recalled because it contains undeclared allergens that could endanger consumers with specific dietary restrictions. The product contains peanuts and gluten, and may also contain barley, rye, and wheat, none of which are properly labeled on UK packaging.

The Food Standards Agency notice states: "This product may pose a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy to peanut, an allergy or intolerance to barley, rye, wheat or cereals containing gluten, or with coeliac disease."

The affected products are 35g packs originally manufactured for the Brazilian market but sold in the UK with added stickers. All batch codes and best before dates are included in the recall. Consumers who have purchased this product and have relevant allergies or conditions should not consume it and should return it to the point of purchase for a full refund, with or without a receipt.

Turkey Breast Pastrami Contaminated with Listeria

Gilbert's 142g packs of Turkey Breast Pastrami have been recalled after testing revealed the presence of Listeria monocytogenes. This bacteria can cause symptoms similar to influenza, including high temperature, muscle aches, chills, nausea, vomiting, and diarrhoea.

The Food Standards Agency cautions: "In rare cases, the infection can be more severe, causing serious complications such as meningitis."

The recall specifically affects products with a use-by date of April 9, 2026, and product codes CK016 or CK027. Consumers are urged to check their refrigerators and dispose of any affected products immediately.

Seven Toys Recalled Over Asbestos Contamination

The Office for Product Safety and Standards has issued a comprehensive recall for seven toys sold at Smyths Toys after discovering potential asbestos contamination in the sand-like material contained within these products. Asbestos is a banned substance that poses significant health risks even at low exposure levels.

The affected toys include:

  • Dino Dig Sensory Bin (248772)
  • Dig In Kit GOLD (231105)
  • Let's Dig Out Dinosaur Eggs 10pc (166403)
  • Gem Dig Kit, 12 Gem Pack (187539)
  • Dig It Up Pirates 13 Treasure Chest (223521)
  • Gem Dig 8 pack

The Office for Product Safety and Standards states: "The product presents a risk to health as the sand-like material inside the toy may be contaminated with a small quantity of asbestos. Asbestos is a banned substance because it poses a risk to health even at low levels of exposure."

Critical Safety Instructions for Toy Disposal

Consumers who possess any of these toys must stop using them immediately and follow specific disposal procedures:

  1. If the sand remains in its original packaging, place it in a heavy-duty plastic bag, double tape it securely, label it clearly, and store it in a secure location away from children.
  2. If the sand has been used, clean all areas where the product was used with wet cloths to prevent dust generation. Wear protective gloves and a mask during this process.
  3. Double bag the sand, gloves, mask, and cleaning cloths for proper disposal.

Keep contaminated materials away from children at all times and thoroughly clean any areas where the toys were used. Customers can contact Smyths Toys directly to arrange refunds for recalled products.

These coordinated recall actions highlight the importance of consumer vigilance regarding product safety. Authorities continue to monitor the situation and may issue additional warnings as investigations progress.
