Travelodge Hires Change Coaches Amid Security Scandal

Travelodge Launches Culture Overhaul After Security Failures

Budget hotel chain Travelodge is urgently hiring a team of Change Delivery Coaches to "transform cultures" and "embed change" into its operations. This move comes as the company faces intense scrutiny over multiple sex abuse incidents, including a high-profile rape case where a man was given a key to a female guest's room.

Mounting Pressure and Public Outcry

The hotel chain has been under fire for weeks following the conviction of Kyran Smith, who was jailed in February for sexually assaulting a woman at a Travelodge in Maidenhead in December 2022. The victim revealed Smith obtained a key card to her room by falsely claiming to be her boyfriend. Since this incident became public, several other women have come forward with disturbing accounts of security breaches and inadequate responses from the company.

Marketing consultant Wendy Griffith described being "trapped" in her Travelodge room for an hour last summer while a naked man banged on her door and performed "vile" sex acts in the corridor. The man, Trevor Reece, 40, pleaded guilty to outraging public decency in September 2025. Another guest, Charlotte Bingley, reported that a staff member entered her room without knocking, leaving her terrified and describing the company's response to her complaints as "despicable."

Leadership Under Fire

Chief Executive Jo Boydell has issued public apologies but has declined to meet with a group of MPs to discuss security improvements, despite Prime Minister Keir Starmer urging her to "seriously engage" with the government. Starmer expressed being "very concerned" that some MPs did not hear from Boydell directly, emphasizing it was "incredibly important" lessons were learned after what he called an "utterly appalling" sexual assault.

Boydell claimed she only learned of the Maidenhead incident when Smith appeared in court, though it has since emerged the victim wrote directly to her in January 2023. Travelodge stated the email was "handled on her behalf." In response to the Prime Minister's letter, Boydell said the company was treating the situation with the "utmost seriousness" and had commissioned an independent review led by Paul Greaney KC to examine room security procedures.

New Hiring Initiative Revealed

Travelodge is now scrambling to protect its reputation by hiring four Change Delivery Coaches, with vacancies posted just a day before Boydell made another public apology. The job descriptions outline responsibilities including:

  • "Truly embedding change into Travelodge's DNA"
  • "Growing behaviors" and "understanding root causes when things aren't going to plan"
  • "Identifying implementation gaps and risks early"
  • "Influencing people and transforming cultures"

The company is also seeking a Senior Change Programme Manager who will be "responsible for the high-level design of complex change, ensuring every initiative has a rock-solid foundation." The advertisement emphasizes a "can-do" approach to solving problems and driving results across multiple sites through collaboration rather than just job titles.

Ongoing Investigations and Political Pressure

Travelodge has offered all interested MPs the chance to contribute to the independent review in writing, though Boydell met only with ministers and specific MPs Jen Craft and Matt Bishop before declining to address a wider parliamentary group. The company maintains it is treating the security concerns with the "utmost seriousness" while implementing changes to its door key policy.

As the budget hotel chain faces continued criticism over its handling of security breaches and guest safety, these new hiring initiatives represent a significant attempt to overhaul corporate culture and restore public trust amid growing political and social pressure.
