Asda Extra Special Greek Koroneiki Extra Virgin Olive Oil has been crowned the best supermarket olive oil for 2026, according to a taste test conducted by a food critic from The Independent. Priced at £8, the oil is made from 100% Greek olives and features a ripe, fruity flavour with subtle spicy undertones.
The critic praised its depth and intensity, describing it as “fruity and slightly creamy with bitter and nutty notes” and a “rocket-like peppery finish.” The bottle’s blue marbled label also stood out among competitors. The oil beat well-known brands such as Filippo Berio, which placed fourth.
Aldi Specially Selected P.D.O Castel Del Monte extra virgin olive oil (£5.49) came second, followed by Belazu early harvest extra virgin olive oil (£13.50) in third. Last year, a separate tasting by a Senior Lifestyle reporter rated Asda’s own brand eight out of ten, praising its fresh notes of green herbs and tomato plants, though the top spot went to Waitrose Extra Virgin Olive Oil with a perfect ten.
Olive oil sommelier Mazen Assaf advised consumers to choose oils in tin or dark glass bottles, as heat, oxygen, and light can destroy flavour and health benefits. He recommended single-origin oils from specific regions, such as Sparta, Greece, and suggested looking for the olive variety on the label to ensure authenticity.
