Mould can easily build up in washing machines due to moisture and leftover detergent, but experts have revealed a simple, cost-effective method using white vinegar to tackle the problem. Marilee Nelson from Branch Basics explains that running a gallon of white distilled vinegar through a full hot water cycle in an empty machine can eliminate mould spores.
White vinegar is highly acidic and antibacterial, making it effective at breaking down detergent residue that mould feeds on. To use, set the washing machine to a 60°C or 90°C cycle and pour about 250ml of white vinegar into the detergent drawer. Run the cycle without any laundry or detergent.
For the rubber seal around the door, spray white vinegar generously and leave it for five minutes before wiping clean. This helps remove mould spores lodged in the material. Experts recommend leaving the door and drawer open after each wash to allow drying, which prevents mould from returning.
This method avoids harsh chemicals like bleach, which can damage clothes, and is safe for use on fabrics. Regular monthly cleaning is advised, especially in hard water areas, to keep the machine mould-free.
