Starbucks has confirmed it is making changes to its UK loyalty scheme, affecting customers from September 3. The coffee chain, a staple of the British high street, announced that members with Starbucks Rewards points will need to trade in more points to claim rewards from that date.
Points Increase for Rewards
The number of points needed for items will increase in a few weeks. Starbucks said the move was made to "ensure Starbucks Rewards continues to deliver great value." The company also noted, "We continue to invest in the programme, with more member benefits to come."
Abby Wilson of Martin Lewis' Money Saving Expert website has urged customers to act if they have been building up points. "If you have a stash of 'stars', consider redeeming them soon to maximise what you get," she said.
Specific Changes from September 3
Customers can check their points on the Starbucks app. Rewards can be claimed at a Starbucks counter, kiosk, or drive-thru, or when ordering via the app. From September 3, a free filter coffee, Americano, or hot tea will require 150 points instead of 130. A free selected bakery item will go from 300 to 350 stars, a free handcrafted beverage from 500 to 600 stars, and free selected merchandise from 1000 to 1150 stars.
Earning and Gold Level Unchanged
Starbucks said customers can still earn 10 stars for every £1 spent, and 2500 stars still reaches Gold Level, which includes free extras and a free birthday drink. The company told customers, "We're excited to be bringing you more of the good stuff, so keep an eye out for what we've got planned for you."
