Shower glass stays clean with no watermarks if cleaned with 'absolutely brilliant' item

A woman has shared a simple tip for keeping shower glass free from watermarks and limescale, using a product many already have at home: toilet limescale remover. The trick was posted on the Mrs Hinch Cleaning Tips and Tricks Facebook page, where she explained how her partner discovered the method and demonstrated its effectiveness with a photo of her gleaming shower screen.

The trick that works

In the post, she wrote: "I've seen a few posts on here about keeping shower screens watermark-clear. My other half discovered a trick to it last week (don't you hate it when they discover a trick and you don't? ! ), which is to wipe over a wet shower screen with...toilet limescale remover!"

She detailed her process: "I put mine onto a sponge (soft side), wiped it all over the screen and then rinsed it off, then wiped it down with a squeegee. Totally worked, as you can see. Now, this doesn't prevent new watermarks, but it does reduce them significantly, and does offer protection for a few days."

Why it works and what to watch out for

Most marks on shower glass result from white, chalky limescale deposits, so a quality toilet cleaner can help remove them. Popular brands such as Viakal and Domestos are widely available from most supermarkets and discount retailers like The Range and B&M. However, it's important to check the label, as some products may be too abrasive for use on shower glass or surrounding surfaces.

One commenter warned: "Great tip. Don't get it on any silver, though, it stains." Another said: "So clear, well done," while a third noted: "I use Viakal, absolutely brilliant, when shower door [is] dry rub down with baby oil this prevents build up of limescale and won't need to be cleaned as often."

Alternative methods

While toilet cleaner can be effective, many other group members said that no cleaning products are needed at all—simply a squeegee or cloth will do, provided it's done consistently. One member shared: "We just squeegee after every shower and it stays clear and shiny." Another added: "I normally just wipe it down with a cloth after every shower and it stays watermark free." A third stated: "I use a window squeegee after every use and never have an issue with limescale or smears."
