Sainsbury's and John Lewis Issue Urgent Food Recalls Over Undeclared Allergens

Sainsbury's has issued an urgent recall for its own-brand Vegan Deli-Style Coleslaw and Vegan Potato Salad after discovering they may contain egg, which is not declared on the label. The products pose a possible health risk for anyone with an allergy or intolerance to egg.

The affected items are Sainsbury's Vegan Deli-Style Coleslaw (300g) with a best before date up to and including 23 December 2019, and Sainsbury's Vegan Potato Salad (300g) with a use by date up to and including 23 December 2019. All batch codes are affected.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) confirmed the recall, stating that the products may contain egg not mentioned on the label. Sainsbury's has issued point-of-sale notices and contacted allergy support organisations. Customers with an egg allergy or intolerance are advised to return the products to any Sainsbury's store for a full refund.

Separately, John Lewis is recalling the Lazzaroni Italian Collection Christmas Gift Bag (690g) because the product label is missing, meaning allergens such as egg, milk, wheat, gluten, almonds, nuts, and soya are not declared. The best before date and batch code are also absent. The FSA warns this poses a risk to those with allergies or intolerances to these ingredients.

Customers who have purchased the John Lewis gift bag are urged not to consume it and to return it to the store for a full refund. Both retailers have apologised for the inconvenience.
