Sainsbury's has confirmed a major change to its Nectar rewards programme, allowing customers to earn points on eligible grocery items ordered through Uber Eats. The move builds on an existing partnership between Nectar and Uber.
Shoppers must enter their full Nectar card number at checkout on the Uber Eats app or website to collect points. Points will not be added retroactively. The new feature is available at participating Sainsbury's stores listed on Uber Eats, with the rollout covering more than 1,300 locations across the UK.
How the points system works
Qualifying points should appear in a customer's account within 28 days. There is no minimum spend to start earning – shoppers only need to spend £1 to collect one Nectar point per £1 spent on eligible products.
Excluded items include gift vouchers, baby milk, lottery tickets, tobacco, vapes and nicotine products, proprietary medicines, and spirits and liqueurs. Additional restrictions apply to alcohol in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland.
Redeeming points for Uber services
Nectar members can also swap their points for vouchers to use on Uber rides or Uber Eats orders. To redeem, members go to the Nectar app, open the “Partners” section and choose Uber. This means customers can earn points on a Sainsbury's grocery order and later use their Nectar balance for discounts on Uber services.
Katie Hunter, Uber Eats general manager for grocery and retail in the UK, said: “We know how much Uber Eats customers love Nectar, so bringing points directly to their Sainsbury’s orders was a no-brainer. Now, they can collect Nectar points on all their Sainsbury’s essentials as well as spending them across the entire Uber app. It’s all about delivering flexibility, convenience and value for customers right alongside their favourite groceries.”
Mark Given, Sainsbury’s chief technology, marketing and data officer, added that this is “another way of helping customers get more from Nectar”.
