Royal Mail Delivery Disruption Hits 20 UK Postcodes This Weekend
Royal Mail Disruption for 20 UK Postcodes This Weekend

Royal Mail has issued a delay warning for certain UK postcodes this weekend, affecting homes and businesses that expect mail deliveries. The delivery firm typically aims to post letters six days a week, with parcel deliveries also taking place on Sundays. However, disruption at some delivery offices has led to delays across 20 postcode areas, including Kidderminster, New Ferry, and Tweedale, as of Saturday, May 9.

Reasons for Delays

Royal Mail stated: "We aim to deliver to all addresses we have mail for, six days a week. In a small number of local offices, this may temporarily not be possible due to local issues such as high levels of sick absence, resourcing, or other local factors. In those cases, we will rotate deliveries to minimise the delay to individual customers. We also provide targeted support to those offices to address their challenges and restore our service to the high standard our customers would normally receive."

The company apologised for any inconvenience and thanked customers for their understanding.

Recent Bank Holiday Impact

Earlier this week, all mail across the UK faced delays due to the Early May Bank Holiday on Monday, May 4, when no deliveries or collections were made. Royal Mail noted that while they deliver and collect mail on most days, including Saturdays, public or local holidays are exceptions.

Turnaround Plan and Targets

The delays come as Royal Mail commits to meeting its letter delivery targets by May 2027 as part of a £500 million turnaround. The firm has faced criticism over late deliveries and was fined £21 million by Ofcom in October for missing targets, delivering only 77% of First Class and 92.5% of Second Class post on time in 2024-25.

Last month, Ofcom lowered delivery targets: First Class post must now be delivered the next day for 90% of items (down from 93%), and Second Class within three days for 95% (down from 98.5%). To meet these targets, Royal Mail plans to axe Saturday Second Class deliveries and switch to alternate weekdays—three days one week, two days the next.

Royal Mail aims to improve First Class Next Day delivery to around 85% within nine months, reaching the 90% target within a year. For Second Class, they vow to deliver 93% within three days over nine months, hitting the 95% target by May next year.
