NatWest updates customers on 90-day account closure notice

NatWest has issued an update to customers regarding its policies on closing bank accounts, following an email sent out on July 27. The email, seen by Express.co.uk, informs account holders of changes to their current account terms, effective from October 1, 2026.

New notice period for account closures

The updated terms relate to the notice NatWest will provide before closing an account. The email states: "New rules introduced in April 2026 mean that if we ever need to close your account, we'll give you at least 90 days' notice and explain why. In some limited situations, this may not apply."

The bank added: "We've updated your terms to reflect this." The email included links to two PDFs, one with information about NatWest current accounts and the other summarising the changes. The message also noted: "If you're happy with the changes, there's nothing you need to do."

Reason for the update

NatWest explained that the email is part of "ongoing mandatory communications" following new Government regulations that apply across the industry. The Labour government introduced changes from April 2026, requiring banks and payment service providers to give at least 90 days' notice before closing an account or terminating a payment service, an increase from the previous two months' notice.

The extended timeframe aims to protect people from debanking, giving customers more time to challenge a decision about their account and to find a new bank if needed. Under the new rules, banks must also provide a clear written explanation when withdrawing services, so customers can effectively challenge decisions, such as through the Financial Ombudsman Service.

Limited exceptions

NatWest noted there are "limited exceptions" when the 90-day notice would not apply, such as when the bank must comply with other legal or regulatory obligations. Government guidance indicates the new rules strictly apply to "contracts agreed from and including 28th April 2026", but banks may choose to apply the 90-day rule to older accounts as well.
