Martin Lewis urges households to make one thermostat change to 'save 10% on bills'
Martin Lewis: one thermostat change can save 10% on bills

Martin Lewis has advised households to turn their thermostat down by just one degree, a change he says could save around 10% on heating bills. The money-saving expert shared the tip on his ITV show, The Martin Lewis Money Show Live, as colder weather prompts many homes to switch on central heating.

One Degree Challenge

Speaking on the programme, Lewis said: "This is a big one. Take my one degree challenge. The World Health Organisation says 18C is fine for adults. Younger, older or ill might need more." He added: "It is not for me to tell you what to do, but I would like you to try reducing one degree. That could save you around 10% on your heating bill."

The Money Saving Expert blog explained that many households set their thermostats in the 20s, and reducing from, say, 21°C to 20°C may not sound significant but should cut the heating bill. It suggested thinking of it as reducing the difference between the current temperature and the target by one degree, which can make up a large portion of the heating requirement.

Thermostat Advice

The blog also noted there is no need to increase the temperature when it is colder outside, as the thermostat's job is to heat the home to the set temperature; it may simply take longer in cold weather. According to the Energy Saving Trust, dropping the temperature by one degree could save around 10% a year on heating for a typical home.

For healthy adults, the World Health Organisation states that 18C is sufficient, with slightly higher temperatures needed for the young and old.

Heating Efficiency

The Energy Saving Trust advises that leaving the heating on all day consumes more fuel and leads to greater heat loss, resulting in higher costs. It recommends heating the home only when needed, rather than paying to heat it when unoccupied, as the best way to save energy and money.
