Money Saving Expert founder Martin Lewis has issued an urgent public alert, revealing that close to one million eligible individuals across the United Kingdom are missing out on substantial financial support through the Department for Work and Pensions' Pension Credit scheme. The consumer champion emphasised that this benefit can be worth thousands of pounds each year, providing a critical income top-up for those on low incomes during retirement.
Urgent Call to Check Eligibility
In a social media post on X, formerly known as Twitter, Martin Lewis directly appealed to his extensive following to share his message widely. He stated clearly: "PENSION CREDIT CAN BE WORTH £1,000s YET 900,000 ELIGIBLE ARE MISSING OUT. You should check if you're of State Pension age, (roughly 66+) with a low total weekly income."
Income Thresholds Explained
Lewis provided specific guidance on the income limits that typically qualify individuals for Pension Credit. For single people of State Pension age, he indicated they are likely eligible if their weekly income is below £238, though he advised checking even if it is under £255 weekly. For couples where both partners have reached State Pension age, eligibility is probable with a combined weekly income under £363, with checks recommended up to £380.
"Don't stall, just call (or check online) to see if you're due it," Lewis urged emphatically. He directed people to the official Gov.uk website to verify their eligibility or to call the dedicated helpline at 0800 99 1234 (0808 100 6165 in Northern Ireland).
Additional Benefits Beyond Income Support
Beyond the direct financial uplift, Pension Credit unlocks a suite of valuable additional perks that can significantly reduce living costs for retirees. Notably, it entitles those aged 75 and over to a completely free TV Licence, saving over £150 annually.
Other associated benefits include potential support with housing costs, such as Housing Benefit for renters or Support for Mortgage Interest for homeowners. Claimants may also access Council Tax reductions, assistance with NHS dental treatments, glasses, and travel expenses for hospital appointments.
Furthermore, the benefit provides help with heating bills through the Warm Home Discount Scheme and offers a discounted rate on Royal Mail's redirection service when moving home. These combined advantages make Pension Credit a comprehensive support package, not merely a cash supplement.
Martin Lewis's intervention highlights a critical gap in benefit uptake, stressing that immediate action could transform the financial wellbeing of hundreds of thousands of pensioners facing economic pressures.
