As a self-confessed non-dress person, I was curious to see if Princess Kate's favourite red sequin dress could convert me. The £495 Needle & Thread Aurora Ballerina dress, worn by the Princess of Wales at a Buckingham Palace reception in 2020 and again at her 2022 Christmas carol service, is a showstopper. I ordered a UK size 14 and found it true to size, though the heavy fabric required an arm workout just to carry it upstairs.
The dress, inspired by a vintage lace tablecloth, is made in India and features red shimmering sequins, long sleeves, and floral elements. The bodice is partially lined, the skirt fully lined, and it fastens with a concealed zip that definitely needs assistance. While Kate's dress appeared brighter in photos, likely due to camera flashes, the real-life version is still exquisite. It also comes in dark green for those who prefer a subtler hue.
I felt instantly regal when I paired it with black Manolo Blahnik heels, another favourite of Catherine's. The dress is flattering despite being tight, and I didn't feel self-conscious about my tummy area. It's a timeless piece that could easily be passed down to Princess Charlotte. If your budget allows and you have a formal event, this dress is worth every penny.
For those on a tighter budget, similar styles are available. Overall, it was a fabulous experience to try on a dress with royal approval, and I returned it with a newfound appreciation for its craftsmanship.
