Millions of households across the UK could be entitled to reclaim money on their BBC TV Licence, thanks to a little-known one-month refund rule.
The One-Month Refund Rule Explained
If your circumstances change and you no longer require a TV Licence, you can apply for a refund provided there is at least one complete month left on it. The TV Licensing authority states: "You can apply for a refund if you won't need your licence again before it expires, and you have at least one complete month left on it." Applications can be submitted up to two weeks before the date you stop needing the licence.
When Do You Actually Need a TV Licence?
Despite the rise of streaming services, many homes still legally require a licence. You must pay the £174.50 annual fee if you:
- Watch or record live TV programmes on any channel.
- Stream live content on online services like YouTube, All 4, or Amazon Prime Video.
- Download or watch any BBC programmes on BBC iPlayer.
However, you do not need a licence if you exclusively use your television for:
- Non-BBC on-demand services (Netflix, Disney+).
- Pre-recorded DVDs or online video clips.
Concessions and Discounts Available
Certain groups are eligible for a free or discounted TV Licence, and can often claim refunds under more flexible terms.
People aged 75 and over can get a free TV Licence if they, or their partner living at the same address, receive Pension Credit. You must apply in advance, and the free licence starts from the beginning of the month after your 75th birthday. Until then, you must continue to pay.
Care home residents may be eligible for a significant discount. Those in qualifying residential care, sheltered accommodation, or supported housing can get a TV Licence for just £7.50. To qualify, you must be either retired and over 60 or disabled. Your housing manager can assist with the application.
Registered blind or severely sight impaired individuals are entitled to a 50% discount. The licence must be registered in the blind person's name for the discount to apply.
The TV Licensing website confirms that those eligible for an over-75 or blind concession "can apply for a refund at any time and for any length of time left on your licence."
With the cost of living putting pressure on household budgets, checking your eligibility for a TV Licence refund or concession could put a welcome £174 back in your pocket.
