Haier Tumble Dryer Recall: Over 85,000 UK Homes to Receive Safety Visits
Haier Tumble Dryer Recall: 85,000 UK Homes Get Safety Visits

The Office for Product Safety and Standards (OPSS) has confirmed that more than 85,000 households across the United Kingdom are scheduled to receive urgent safety visits from manufacturers. This action follows significant fire safety concerns linked to specific tumble dryer models produced by Haier.

Urgent Safety Notice and Remedial Programme

An urgent safety notice was initially issued last year, targeting tumble dryers manufactured by Haier. These appliances are also marketed under several other well-known brands, including Baumatic, Candy, Caple, Vacuum, Iberna, Lamona, and Montpellier. In response to the identified risks, the OPSS announced a comprehensive remedial programme designed to ensure the safety of these products.

The UK manufacturers have initiated a modification programme for products in scope of the safety issue, stated the regulator. The companies will visit every home containing affected tumble dryers and make them safe. This proactive approach aims to address potential hazards directly in consumers' homes, minimizing the risk of fire incidents.

Identifying Affected Models and Risks

The OPSS is strongly urging all members of the public who may be impacted to verify whether their tumble dryer is among the affected models. For this purpose, a dedicated Product Safety Report page has been created for each product, accessible via the OPSS website. These reports provide detailed information on the specific models involved, the associated risks, and the corrective actions required.

According to the safety alert, the tumble dryers in question present a serious fire risk. During normal use, an internal short circuit can occur within the appliance, potentially leading to ignition and a subsequent fire. The OPSS has determined that these products do not comply with the safety standards outlined in the Electrical Equipment (Safety) Regulations 2016, underscoring the necessity of the recall and modification efforts.

Consumer Guidance and Contact Information

To assist consumers, the OPSS has provided multiple channels for obtaining further information and support. Individuals can contact the dedicated helpline at 0808 178 0516 or visit the Product Safety – Haier Europe website online. The regulator emphasizes the importance of taking prompt action, especially for those who are uncertain about whether their appliance is affected.

This large-scale safety initiative highlights ongoing concerns about product safety in the household appliance sector. With over 85,000 homes involved, it represents one of the most significant recall efforts in recent years, aimed at protecting UK consumers from potential fire hazards associated with everyday appliances.
