Manchester accountant's grocery hack saves families £400 a year
Groceries hack saves families £400 a year

Beth Snow, a 30-year-old chartered accountant from Manchester, has shared a grocery shopping hack that could save families up to £400 a year. By using cashback gift cards for her weekly shop, she earns up to 5% cashback, which accumulates to about £100 annually—roughly two weeks of free groceries for her.

How the cashback gift card hack works

Beth purchases gift cards from cashback sites like Ever Up, Cheddar, Sprite, or Cashback, then uses them to pay for her supermarket shopping. She receives 2% to 5% cashback on each transaction. For example, buying a £100 gift card yields £2 to £5 back. The cashback is deposited into her app balance, which she can later use to buy another gift card, effectively creating a cycle of savings.

“It’s a really, really easy process to do, and if you add up the number of times you do food shopping, you can make a serious amount of cash back every year,” Beth said. She noted that the method applies to more than just groceries, as cashback offers are available for many purchases.

Potential savings for families

Based on her own savings, Beth estimates a family of four could save around £400 per year using this method. Most major supermarkets—including Tesco, Asda, and Morrisons—regularly offer cashback deals. Aldi appears occasionally, depending on promotions. “I have all the different apps downloaded, so I can check which ones have the best rate. There’s no point in staying loyal when you can get better cash back elsewhere,” she advised.

Beth also revealed that cashback rates often increase near the end of the month to attract more buyers. “For example, if Tesco has 2% cashback, near pay day, they might boost that to 5%.” She emphasized that using cashback can provide about two weeks of free shopping annually, with even greater savings for larger families.
