Expat Warns Benidorm Tourists of Two Road Mistakes

A British expat living in Benidorm is urging tourists to avoid two common but dangerous mistakes that could land them in hospital. As summer approaches, many Britons flock to the Spanish resort town, but Frank, known online as Frank the Stag Man, warns that local road rules differ significantly from those in the UK.

Mistake 1: Assuming Cars Stop at Zebra Crossings

Frank explains that while zebra crossings exist in Spain and drivers are legally required to stop for pedestrians, many do not. Unlike in the UK, where drivers almost always yield, Spanish drivers may ignore the crossing if there is no traffic light. Tourists should wait until traffic has clearly stopped before stepping onto the road.

Mistake 2: Looking the Wrong Way

Another critical error is looking in the wrong direction for oncoming traffic. In Spain, vehicles drive on the right side of the road, so pedestrians must look left first, then right. Frank says many tourists instinctively look in the direction they would in the UK, putting them at risk of being hit.

Potential Consequences

Frank warns that if a pedestrian is at fault—for example, by not looking properly—they could be liable for damages to the vehicle that hits them, in addition to medical bills. He urges tourists to be vigilant: "Don't assume cars will stop. Always look the right way."
