Emirates to Revolutionise Air Travel with En-Suite Bathrooms in First Class
Emirates Plans En-Suite Bathrooms for First Class

Emirates has announced ambitious plans to become the first commercial airline to offer private en-suite bathrooms for first-class passengers. The airline's president, Tim Clark, confirmed during a video call at the 2026 Capa Airline Leader Summit in Berlin that work is underway to integrate these facilities into first-class suites.

Luxury Redefined

Clark stated, "I'm working on en-suite bathrooms in first-class suites. I want everyone to hear that so everyone rushes out the door to find out how they can get bathrooms in first-class suites," as reported by The National. The UAE flag carrier currently operates first-class cabins on its Airbus A380 and Boeing 777 aircraft, offering passengers fine dining, an onboard shower spa, and a lounge bar.

Emirates describes its first-class experience as a "private hotel room in the sky," featuring temperature controls, mood lighting, and "soft leather seating reminiscent of a Mercedes-Benz S-Class." If successful, Emirates will be the first airline to provide private en-suite bathrooms for every first-class seat. The Independent has reached out to Emirates for further comment.

Competition and Innovation

Meanwhile, Air New Zealand is introducing a novel sleeping solution for economy passengers on long-haul flights. The airline will open bookings next month for its "Skynest" seats, which allow economy class passengers to lie flat. These will debut on select ultra-long-haul flights between New York and Auckland, with bookings starting 18 May and travel from November.

While beds on planes are not new—most airlines offer lie-flat seats in upper class—Air New Zealand's approach is modern and not limited to premium travellers, harking back to early aviation bunk beds but with contemporary design.
