The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has confirmed a benefit worth up to £80 per week that can unlock access to a Blue Badge. A Blue Badge is a parking permit that allows people with mobility issues or disabilities to park closer to where they need to go, such as at supermarkets and hospitals.
The permit can be used if you are travelling in the vehicle as a driver or passenger, or if someone is collecting you or dropping you off and needs to park close to the entrance. However, it cannot be given to friends or family to allow them to park for free.
Eligibility for PIP and Blue Badge
You may be eligible for a Blue Badge if you get the mobility part of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), which is worth up to £80 per week. PIP is awarded to those who suffer from a long-term physical or mental health condition or disability that makes doing everyday tasks or getting around difficult.
There are two parts to the benefit: a daily living part if you need help with everyday tasks, and a mobility part if you need help with getting around. It is the latter that can grant access to a Blue Badge.
Mobility payment rates
The mobility payment is split into two parts: a lower rate of £30.30 per week and a higher rate of £80 per week. Explaining the criteria for this payment, the DWP said: “You might get the mobility part of PIP if you need help with: working out a route and following it; physically moving around; leaving your home. You do not have to have a physical disability to get the mobility part. You might also be eligible if you have difficulty getting around because of a cognitive or mental health condition, like anxiety.”
Additional transport perks
If you meet the qualifying criteria, this can unlock access to various transport perks, including a Blue Badge, a vehicle tax exemption and a discount on Council Tax and local bus travel. The DWP added: “If you get the mobility part of PIP, you might be eligible for a: Blue Badge; vehicle tax discount or exemption; Motability Scheme vehicle, if you get the higher mobility rate of PIP. If you get either the daily living or mobility part of PIP you’re eligible for a Disabled Persons Railcard. You may be able to get a discount on Council Tax and local bus travel. Contact your local council to check.”
Applying for a Blue Badge
According to the Department for Transport (DfT), PIP claimants will automatically qualify for a Blue Badge if they cannot walk more than 50 metres, which scores eight points or more under the ‘moving around’ activity of the mobility component.
If you are eligible for a Blue Badge, you can apply online via GOV.UK. The permit costs up to £10 in England and £20 in Scotland, but it is free in Wales. There is a different way to apply if you are in Northern Ireland. A Blue Badge usually lasts for up to three years and you must reapply before your current one expires.
