Households across the UK are being reminded of an August deadline to secure a £150 discount on their energy bills this winter. The Warm Home Discount, a one-off payment applied to electricity bills, is available to millions of people on means-tested benefits, but claimants must ensure they are named on their energy bill by August 23 to receive it automatically.
Key deadline and eligibility
Citizens Advice has issued a reminder on social media, stating: "If you get means-tested benefits like Pension Credit or Universal Credit, you could be eligible for the £150 Warm Home Discount this winter. You must be named on your energy bill by 23 August to receive it automatically."
The scheme, which reopens in October 2026, provides a £150 discount applied directly to your electricity bill by your supplier. The money is not paid to you. If your supplier provides both gas and electricity, you may be able to get the discount on your gas bill instead.
Who qualifies and how to apply
To qualify in England or Wales, all of the following must apply: your energy supplier is part of the scheme, you or your partner receive certain means-tested benefits, and your name (or your partner's) is on the electricity bill. These conditions must be met on August 23, 2026.
The qualifying benefits are:
- Universal Credit
- Housing Benefit
- income-related Employment and Support Allowance (ESA)
- Pension Credit
Customers on pre-payment meters who use a key or card to top up must also ensure their account is registered in their name. If you are eligible, your supplier will apply the discount automatically. For pre-payment meter users, the supplier will explain how the discount will be provided, such as a voucher to top up.
People who have recently moved house may not be named on their bill, so it is important to check with your supplier. The Government has urged households to verify their details, as suppliers will rely on records as of August 23.
