Rapist Joseph Alfasi jailed after DNA evidence

Joseph Alfasi, a 23-year-old from Ginkgo Grove, Somerford, has been jailed for eight years and six months after being convicted of rape and assault by penetration. Detectives described him as a "dangerous predator" and a significant threat to women.

Alfasi was sentenced at Chester Crown Court on Tuesday, October 13. He had previously been found guilty of three counts of rape and one count of assault by penetration, while being acquitted of a further count of assault by penetration.

DNA evidence key to conviction

The court heard that Alfasi raped a female victim at his home near Congleton in March 2023. During a police interview, he denied any wrongdoing but could not explain why his DNA was found on the victim. He was subsequently charged with the offences.

Detective praises victim's courage

Detective Constable Kris Aston praised the victim for her courage throughout the investigation and court proceedings. He said: "Firstly, I would like to acknowledge the immense strength and courage the victim has shown throughout this case.

"Understandably, much of her life over recent years has been overshadowed by this lengthy and complex investigation. She then had to relive her trauma during the trial, and it is thanks to her bravery and determination that a dangerous predator, who poses a significant threat to women, has been held responsible for his horrific actions.

"I hope this result allows the victim to move forward with her life and provides her with some form of closure. I also hope her courage gives other victims the confidence to come forward and report any offences against them.

"Finally, I hope this custodial sentence gives Alfasi time to reflect on the devastating impact of his actions and the lasting harm he has caused."

Victim's letter of gratitude

Following the conclusion of the case, the victim gave permission for a short extract from a letter she sent to DC Aston to be shared. In the letter, she thanked the officer for supporting her and her family throughout the process.

She wrote: "I am so grateful for your support and optimism. You have been a huge comfort to both me and my family.

"I know how rare it is to get an outcome as good as this and it means more to me than I can put into words. Thank you for answering all late texts and endless questions. Most of all, thank you for helping me speak my truth and feel seen."
